This is Stubbs!

Meet Stubbs!

This is Stubbs, also known as my very best friend.  He is a 3 year old Cairn Terrier/Mini Schnauzer Mix.  This dog has energy that I can’t even begin to describe.  He loves to be outside, loves to run, and loves to explore.  Who ever knew that chasing squirrels could be so much fun?  Stubbs has been in my life for almost two years, and our story so far is an exciting one (well, at least I like to think so).

My mom and I went to look for a new dog at our local Humane Society after we had to put down our 18 year old Cairn Terrier, Jumper, due to old age.  Jumper was a wonderful companion and we knew it would be really hard to try to bring a new dog into the house, but it just felt so empty at home without a dog.  Mom had been searching the Humane Society website for a terrier mix and when Stubbs popped up, we knew we had to at least go meet him.  We took him out into the play area when we got to the Humane Society and he wanted nothing to do with us!  He was very interested in the other dogs around, just not us.  We decided to walk another dog around, but for some reason, I was set on having Stubbs.  We took him home that night.

At barely two years old, he was bigger, louder, and way more energetic than my sleepy 18 year old Jumper.  However, we quickly adjusted to this new puppy and decided he would stay with us forever.  Stubbs and I learned a lot about each other through the next few months, and after countless pairs of chewed shoes, a damaged Kindle, and a destroyed interview portfolio, I’m happy to say that he’s still my best friend.  When I got married in July of 2015, there was no question that Stubbs was moving with me.  He’s always ready for a new adventure and making new friends.

Stubbs may only be 26 pounds, but he can be very protective and that gives me peace of mind when we run together.  He’ll run eight miles or more, then get home and be ready to play for the next few hours (seriously, WHERE does his energy come from?!).  He takes many trips to the barn with me to visit the horses, and sits quietly when our cats decide he needs a bath.  Even though Stubbs has a great personality, he does NOT like to cuddle, much to my dismay.  The only time he will willingly cuddle is when there is a thunderstorm and he climbs in my lap, shaking, until the storm ends.

We are working through training classes because I think it’s important for all dogs to have good manners.  Stubbs goes camping and canoeing with us, and we often take him to dinner with us if we find a place with a pet-friendly patio.  We have completed Basic Obedience and Advanced Obedience so far, and I have plans to branch into a few different activities with him in the future.  Stubbs is very smart and I think he would do well with Agility, Rally-O, and therapy work.  I won’t push him to do something he’s not comfortable with, but I think he can excel at whatever we decide to try.

So, this is Stubbs, my super-energetic, loveable fur baby.  What about you?  Do you have pets?  If so, how many?  Do they travel with you?  Let me know about your animals in the comments!
